The Department of Archives and History relies primarily on donations to add to its collections. We welcome donations of materials which help tell the story of the people of Alabama. We also collect books and other materials about Alabama for our reference collection.
Donating Private Records and Artifacts
If you would like to offer material for the permanent archival or museum collections, please submit a description of the material using a Potential Donor Form. If you prefer to speak with someone about a potential donation, contact our registrar, Sherrie Hamil, by e-mail or by phone at (334) 353-4726. The ADAH does not provide monetary appraisals of materials, but we do provide a list of professional appraisers.
Volunteers are a vital part of the team that carries out the mission of the Department of Archives and History and the Museum of Alabama. They lead tours of our galleries, greet visitors at our reception desk, assist in processing collections, help children discover Alabama’s past in the Hands-On Gallery, and operate our Museum Store.
Opportunities are available for all ages, and hours are set to match your schedule. We want volunteering to be rewarding and enjoyable for you!
Our junior volunteer program is a terrific way to fulfill service-learning requirements.
As a volunteer, you will have access to special parking, receive a 10% discount in the Museum Store, receive a monthly volunteer newsletter, receive invitations to special events, and get a firsthand look at what happens behind the scenes at the Museum and the Archives.
